Minerals for Dairy Goats

March 27th, 2011

Minerals are a critical component of Dairy Goat Management.  Many soils used in the production of alfalfa and other feedstuffs used for Dairy Goats are stripped of minerals after years of farming.  Because these minerals are not present in the feeds, they must be supplemented.

We do this by feeding free choice minerals to our goats.  Two of the minerals most essential to the health of a dairy goat are copper and selenium.  We copper bolus our goats every 6 months but also feed a high quality mineral.

I like to feed loose minerals rather than mineral blocks.  Considering each goat needs an ounce or so per day, it would be pretty hard to lick enough of a hard block to get the appropriate amount of mineral.  I also choose to feed a loose mineral because I can keep it cleaner and control waste.  The completed feeder can be attached to a barn wall, a post, or a fence using plumbers strap or baling wire.
The goats stick their muzzle in the open end of the “Y” (the opening that the arrow is pointing to) to get to the minerals. They would really have to work at it if they wanted to foul the minerals with urine or pellets. 3 or 4 inch pvc can be used.

Mineral Feeder (1) 3 inch PVC pipe 12-24 inches long
(1) 3 inch PVC “Y”
(2) 3 inch PVC caps.
The pipe is cemented to the “Y” with PVC cement.
The caps, both top and bottom (A & B in the drawing), are not glued on – The top must be removed periodically to fill the feeder and the bottom must be removable to clean it out. To make the caps removable yet held in place you can first place the caps in position then drill a 1/8 inch hole through each cap and continue on through the pipe underneath. Then place a cotter pin in the hole. It’s best to do this in an inconspicuous place (way around the side or at the back) – goats are very curious and will pull the pin out and might swallow it.

I have also included a comparison of some of the available minerals.  We used to Use Cargil-Right-Now Onyx.  However it was $40 per 50 lb bag.  We now use IFA’s ICBM Range Force 12.  It is Just over $20 for a 50 lb bag and has more selinium and a little less copper (which is fine becuase we copper bolus.)

Another readily available and good mineral is Sweetlix Meat Maker for goats, in the loose mineral not the block.  If you don’t have access to the Right Now Onyx or Range Force ICBM, consider the Sweetlix.  It is a little more expensive as it is sold in 20 lb bags but it is a very good alternative.
